All Wales Medical Genomics Service Clinical Genetics Services Relocating to Cardiff Edge Life Science Park: A New Era for Genomic Medicine in Wales

Welsh healthcare is on the brink of an exciting transformation as the All-Wales Medical Genomics Service (AWMGS) clinical services prepare for their big move to a new £15.3m state-of-the-art genomics facility Cardiff Edge Life Science Park in the Welsh capital on November 6, 2023.
The new facility, Canolfan Iechyd Genomig Cymru/ Wales Genomic Health Centre located at CD1 Longwood Drive, Cardiff, CF14 7YU, will co-locate AWMGS with the Pathogen Genomics Unit (PenGU) which is part of Public Health Wales’ Microbiology Services and the Wales Gene Park, hosted by Cardiff University, adhering with Genomics Partnership Wales’ vision, “working together to harness the potential of genomics to improve the health, wealth and prosperity of the people of Wales”.
This strategic positioning aims to create a hub of innovation and collaboration in genomics and healthcare.
Here are some of the key advantages this move will bring:

Cutting-Edge Genomic Medicine Facility - The relocation will usher in a state-of-the-art genomic medicine facility, equipped with the latest technologies and resources. This upgrade promises improved patient care and enhanced capabilities in genomic research.

Integration of Services - Co-location with PenGU and Wales Gene Park will foster closer collaboration and seamless integration of services. This will streamline clinical and laboratory testing, pathogen monitoring, and genomic research efforts, ultimately benefiting patients.

Support for Genomic Research - The new facility will provide an ideal environment for expanding genomic research initiatives across Wales. The new facility will provide creative collaboration spaces where researchers from different organisations will have access to advanced equipment and resources, stimulating innovation and discovery in the field of genomic health.

Translating Genomic Medicine - A significant advantage of the relocation is its support for translating genomic discoveries from the research bench to practical clinical applications. This means that new genomic technologies and findings can be swiftly evaluated and implemented, leading to tangible improvements in patient care.

Global Competitiveness - The outward-facing nature of the hub will position Wales on the global stage, attracting high-value partnerships and collaborations. These partnerships will expedite the mainstreaming and understanding of genomics, benefiting citizens not only in Wales but also globally.

Capacity for Growth - The facility has been designed with future growth in mind. It can accommodate the advancement of new genomic technologies and the expansion of the workforce, ensuring that Wales remains at the forefront of genomics research and healthcare delivery.

In summary, the relocation of AWMGS clinical services to Cardiff Edge Life Science Park with key research and operational delivery partners marks a significant milestone in advancing genomic health and innovation in Wales.

Please note that the AWMGS Laboratory team will continue to operate from UHW until further notice, please continue to submit laboratory samples to the current address. This team will then be relocating in phase 2 of the project – details of this will be provided at a later date.
